So, you're looking for the bard. Maybe you've heard about the legendary Potent Robe—arguably the best-in-slot item for Warlocks—or you just want to hear that "Weeping Dawn" song everyone talks about. Whatever the reason, finding Alfira isn't always as simple as walking into a tavern and looking for the person with the lute.
She's slippery. If you make the wrong choice in Act 1, she’s gone. If you’re playing a specific origin, she’s... well, she's in a lot of trouble.
Knowing where to find Alfira in BG3 across all three acts is basically a requirement for a "good" playthrough. Here is exactly where she is, how to stop her from dying, and what you actually get for being her roadie.
Act 1: The Emerald Grove and the squirrel problem
In Act 1, Alfira is tucked away in a spot that most players honestly just walk right past. She isn’t in the main "hollow" where the vendors are. You have to put in a little legwork.
Head into the Emerald Grove. Go past the ritual circle where the druids are chanting. Look for a dirt path leading up a cliff to the east (around coordinates X:284, Y:494). You’ll know you’re close when you hear some frustrated lute strumming.
She’s sitting there trying to finish a song for her late teacher, Lihala.
Pro Tip: Talk to the squirrels near her using "Speak with Animals" before you talk to her. They have some... strong opinions about her musical talent. It’s one of the funniest small moments in the early game.
How to get the "musical instrument" proficiency
If you aren't playing a Bard but want to be able to play instruments, Alfira is your golden ticket.
- Choose the "Let me see if I can help" option.
- You’ll need to pass two Performance checks (DC 15 then DC 10).
- If you succeed, you’ll jam out together, she finishes the song, and you gain Musical Instrument Proficiency forever.
If you fail? You can still get her lute, but you won't get the proficiency.
The Tiefling Party
After you’ve dealt with the Goblin Leaders (assuming you sided with the Grove), Alfira will show up at your camp for the celebration. She’s usually hanging out near the fire or by the water with Lakrissa. This is the last time you’ll see her in Act 1.
The Dark Urge: How to "save" Alfira from yourself
Let's address the elephant in the room. If you are playing as the Dark Urge (Durge), Alfira's story usually ends very abruptly.
Usually, she’ll show up at your camp one night asking to join your adventures. Most players get excited—"A new companion!" Then you go to sleep and wake up with her internal organs on the outside. It’s a scripted event. There is no "Persuasion" check to stop it.
The "Knockout" Trick
If you want that Potent Robe later but you're playing Durge, you have to metagame a bit.
- Save often: The event usually triggers early, often after you cross the bridge toward the Blighted Village.
- Go to the Grove: Before you take a long rest that you suspect will trigger her arrival, go find her at her cliffside spot.
- Toggle Non-Lethal Attacks: Smash her over the head until she is "Unconscious."
- Long Rest: Because Alfira is unconscious, the game's "backup" bard, a Dragonborn named Quil, will show up at your camp instead.
Poor Quil will meet the messy end intended for Alfira, but Alfira will wake up the next morning in the Grove, totally fine (if a bit confused about the headache). This is the only way to get her rewards in Act 2 as a Dark Urge player.
Act 2: Last Light Inn and the best robe in the game
If she survived Act 1, you’ll find Alfira in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Specifically, she’s inside the Last Light Inn (X:-66, Y:142). She’s sitting by the fireplace, looking pretty miserable.
She'll tell you that the cultists took a bunch of Tieflings—including her friend (and "more than friend") Lakrissa—to Moonrise Towers.
The "Rescue the Tieflings" Quest
This is her big quest. You need to go to the Moonrise Towers Prison and break them out.
- Don't kill the Nightsong yet. If you go into the Shadowfell and finish the Nightsong quest before saving the prisoners, they will all die.
- Go to the prison, give the Gnomes a hammer, or just kill the guards and open the cells.
- Make sure Lakrissa gets to the boat at the back of the prison.
Once they're safe, head back to Last Light Inn. Talk to Alfira, and she will give you the Potent Robe.
Why the robe matters: It adds your Charisma modifier to the damage of your cantrips. If you’re an Eldritch Blast-slinging Warlock, this is the single most important item in your build.
Act 3: The rooftop of the Elfsong Tavern
By the time you reach the city of Baldur's Gate, Alfira is finally living her dream. Well, mostly.
You can find her on the rooftop of the Elfsong Tavern in the Lower City (X:68, Y:-18). You have to go inside the tavern, head upstairs to the rooms you can rent, and find the ladder leading to the roof.
She’s there with Lakrissa, overlooking the city. If you talk to her, she’ll tell you about her plans to open a school for bards. It’s a sweet ending to a character who spends most of the game being traumatized. She’ll also give you a gift (the Cherished Lute) if you’ve been consistently helpful.
What happens if you can't find her?
If she isn't in these spots, one of a few things happened:
- You sided with Minthara: If you raided the Grove, Alfira is dead. You can find her body in the Tiefling hideout near the kids.
- You didn't save the prisoners: If you went to the Shadowfell in Act 2, she stays at the Inn but remains depressed and won't give you the good loot.
- The "Strange Ox" happened: If the Last Light Inn's protection fell, she’s likely a shadow-cursed undead now.
Your next steps in the Grove
If you're still in Act 1, head to those coordinates (X:284, Y:494) right now. Even if you aren't a Bard, having that extra character with Musical Instrument Proficiency makes the "short rest" vibes at camp way better. Just make sure you bring a lute. Or a drum. Honestly, the drum is better.
Once you've secured her safety, keep an eye on your Long Rests; if you're the Dark Urge, that "knockout" window is smaller than you think. Save the Tieflings, get that robe, and make sure she makes it to the Elfsong.
